Our mining team continues to grow in Europe, and we are now seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer in Portugal (fully remote), to join our network of Tailings & Mine Waste experts.

 

Our projects include:

  • Mine waste and tailings management studies
  • Tailings storage facility design
  • Mine site civil infrastructure design
  • Mine closure planning and design
  • Dam safety reviews and audits
  • Geotechnical investigations, assessments and analysis to support the above.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This role focuses on supporting our client’s tailings and mine waste management teams to ensure that their facilities are safe.  Compliance with the latest standards (which are evolving) is critical for mining companies to demonstrate their commitment to ESG and for the Social License to Operate. This role forms part of our team to provide the technical and operational support for Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs).

 

As a Tailings / Geotechnical Engineer, this role requires the application of the tasks listed below (geotechnical engineer), but also an expanding knowledge of all elements and disciplines required to design these facilities, such as hydrogeology, process, geochemistry, water, civil engineering and social engagement.

Some of the key responsibilities may include:

 

  • Civil/Geotechnical/Tailings dam design; 
  • Geotechnical analyses using various software packages;
  • Understanding of tailing deposition modelling (Muk3D) 
  • Geotechnical and environmental site characterisation;
  • Development and management of instrumentation monitoring systems;
  • Some Project/task management and proposal preparation support;
  • Preparation of engineering reports, design calculations, drawings, technical specifications.

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or geotechnical engineering, or a related field of study. (required) 
  • Advanced degree in civil or geotechnical engineering, or a related field of study. (preferred)
  • Professional registration (preferred but not essential)

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in a consulting environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. (required) 
  • Knowledge of relevant geotechnical engineering software. (required) 
  • Knowledge of numerical modeling tools. (preferred)
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, handling multiple project assignments, meeting strict deadlines, and traveling to client facilities as needed. (required) 
  • Experience in GIS, CAD or Tailings Modelling software (i.e. QGIS, 12d, AutoCAD, Civil3D, or Muk3D) (desirable)
  • Familiarity with dam safety guidelines including ANCOLD, GISTM, CDA and WA-DMR (desirable)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. (required)
  • Field work and overnight travel may be required.
  • Valid Portuguese driving license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
